In recent years it has become easier to find native trees, shrubs and plants at local nurseries. In Wellington County you can even get free native trees and shrubs from Green Legacy. The stock that they provide is smaller than what you might find at other nurseries but if you have time to watch them grow its worth it. Finding larger stock native trees can be tricky depending on species but most nurseries have at least some species available.
Trees that Feed the Birds & Bees.
If you want to attract birds, bees and other beneficial insects to your yard, you can plant specific trees and shrubs. Prunus species (aka cherries) are a favourite for bees and birds alike as they have attractive flowers for pollinators and tasty berries for birds. Serviceberry is another beautiful Spring flowering small tree that also has delicious berries that the birds love. Some people may be concerned about berries being messy but the birds take care of the fruit long before it can fall to the ground.
