Red Oak

Trees are beautiful additions to any property. They also provide numerous environmental benefits, from cleaning the air to offering shelter for wildlife. Planting trees in the urban landscape helps build a greener environment for the future. However, tree planting is more than just digging a hole and plopping in a tree.

Planting trees for biodiversity.

If you are considering planting trees on your property, an important consideration is tree species. In many urban areas, the trees planted can become monocultures of a single species. This can become a serious problem if pests or disease make their way into the area. Planting with a consideration for biodiversity helps mitigate this problem and has many benefits for the environment. The more diverse your plantings are, the better they will support the local ecosystem. Take note of other trees in your yard and neighbourhood and try to add diversity by planting species that are not already represented.

Planting Native species.

Trees and shrubs that are native to your region will do better than those from far away places. They will also support native wildlife like birds and bees. In many yards the focus is on non-native cultivars that add little to the ecosystem. Some introduced species can even be harmful by becoming invasive and outcompeting native species. (We are looking at you Norway Maple!) Choosing native trees, shrubs and plants adds to biodiversity and support a healthy urban ecosystem.

Planning and Acquiring Native Trees and Shrubs.

Knowing which species to plant can be tricky if you are not familiar with native trees and shrubs. Thankfully we have arborists on staff who have decades of experience in this field. If you are interested in adding native trees and shrubs to your yard, we are available for consultation to plan your planting.

In recent years it has become easier to find native trees, shrubs and plants at local nurseries. In Wellington County you can even get free native trees and shrubs from Green Legacy. The stock that they provide is smaller than what you might find at other nurseries but if you have time to watch them grow its worth it. Finding larger stock native trees can be tricky depending on species but most nurseries have at least some species available.

Trees that Feed the Birds & Bees.

If you want to attract birds, bees and other beneficial insects to your yard, you can plant specific trees and shrubs. Prunus species (aka cherries) are a favourite for bees and birds alike as they have attractive flowers for pollinators and tasty berries for birds. Serviceberry is another beautiful Spring flowering small tree that also has delicious berries that the birds love. Some people may be concerned about berries being messy but the birds take care of the fruit long before it can fall to the ground.

At Baum Professional Tree Care, we not only have the skills and knowledge but also a deep passion for trees. We understand the importance of each tree in our community and strive to provide them with the best care possible.
